Economic sustenance & SHGs – Solar Dry Fish Unit
A majority of members of CS are fisher women and earn their livelihood by selling dry fish in market. Its os observed that these women, due to lack of proper awareness, employ unscientific & un hygiene methods use drying fish use open air drying. As result, the final product is of interior quality and is suitable only for consumption/Sale in local markets.
however if more scientific methods like solar heating etc, are used for drying fish, the final product that will be available will be of superior and export suitable quality. The members will then b able to improve their earnings and become more self reliant. A typical project that is likely provide improved livelihood options for about 500 families will start from the next financial year.
Health Care – AIDS
As per available data, incidence of HIV & AIDS all over the world is rampant, especially in developing countries like India. The present statistics indicate alarming growth rate of incidence of this epidemic and the commitment that is required from governmental and non- governmental agencies for making efforts to control this dreadful disease.
The plight of women & children affected by this disease is all the more pitiable because of various socioeconomic factors like social boycott, no moral support etc. Taking into account all these aspects, CS has offered to serve the victims of HIV & AIDS disease in a humble way by starting CARE AND SUPPORT CENTRE FOR HIV & AIDS EFFECTED. The main objectives of this project are to provide social, medical, economical and educational support to HIV & AIDS patients with more emphasis on rehabilitating women and children and preventive measles. Eminent persons from various walks of life like medical practitioners, social workers, economists & business people have evinced keen interest to strengthen the hands of CS in fighting this dreadful disease.
CS has approached Governmental and non- governmental agencies for their help in various aspects like premises for housing the transit home, financial support to meet the day -to-day requirements of the inmates and for identifying livelihood generating opportunities for the women affected by this disease. The project has received support and encouragement from one and all and the transit home is likely to become functional from April 2008.
Education – Scholarships Scheme
Every year, for the past 12 years, CS in its endeavor to promote literacy amongst the school going children, has provided scholarships to about 30 no’s of poor and meritorious students for completing their studies. The beneficiaries were identified by a committee consisting of executive members of CS and other luminance, on the beneficiaries were provided with tuition fees, class book etc., for the period of study under scholarship
In order to provide such assistance to more no of students, CS proposes to provide scholarships for 100 students from the academic year 2007-08 and the scholarships will be announced as is the piratical, on 14th Nov 2007 i.e., Children’s Day
Micro-Credit Groups – Gruhalakshmi Mutually Aided Cooperative Society
As part of the emphasis on providing means of sustainable livelihood to members, CS has endeavored to promote the concepts of self help groups (SHGs) and encouraged members to save in the form of thrift savings. Due to the efforts of CS, today there are about 330 SHGs consisting of about 6000 members. The total internal thrift savings across as on date is about Rs. 80 lakhs(US§ 1.5 million) and resources mobilised through institutional finance for internal lending is about Rs.130 lakhs(US § 2.5 millions)
.It is observed that the twin concept of internal thrift savings by the members and internal money leading to the fellow members and at lower interest rates has had multifold advantages for members. firstly, there is very little or o dependence on local money leaders who have for so long fleeced these people with very high interest rates. Secondly the additional revenues generated by the groups through the internal money lending has contributed to higher income levels for all the members
In order to maximize this advantage, CS has on proposed to start “Gruhalakshimi mutually aided cooperative society ” with the objective of providing Institutionalized Micro-credit finance systems. this cooperative Society will offer NBFC services to the members. This Society will borrow funds from FI’s, Banks & other organizations who wish to invest their money and the society will use the same for meeting the financial requirements of the members. The Society is expected to start functioning from the next financial year i.e., from april 2007.
